Letter from Gelsey

Dear Friends,

My mission as a ballerina and as a teacher has always been to strive for theatrical depth of character and technical virtuosity in the classroom and onstage. I have come to believe over the years that the future of ballet lies in the art of dramatic story telling, drawing on the wellsprings of classical tradition.

In the hope of pursuing and sharing this perspective, I have established a not-for-profit ballet academy that offers comprehensive training to gifted students and a studio company with choreographic and performance opportunities for professionals.

In my drive to understand ballet from a deeply heartfelt point of view, I have developed a variety of innovative training techniques that help dancers acquire and refine the skills necessary to create a compelling character and fully fleshed out performance.

This knowledge was passed on to me through my work with master teachers in a quiet studio environment, shielded from the pressures of the companies that I danced with. I have established the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet with the intention of sharing these secrets with the next generation of dancers.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to encourage a renaissance of dramatic storytelling in ballet by providing specialized training for gifted students and by establishing a classically-oriented studio company capable of creating new dramatic works.

Our Vision

We believe that in ballet, along with all the other classical arts, the 20th Century experiment with abstraction is coming to its logical end. Abstract ballet is increasingly seen as diminished or absent of meaning.

Many people leave the theater after a ballet performance impressed by technique and athleticism, but disappointed, with their hearts untouched.

We advocate a return to story ballet through the collaboration of world-class choreographers and dancers, librettists, dramaturges, composers, musical directors, designers and theatre directors.
