Announcement of Children's Program, January 11, 2011

The Gelsey Kirkland Academy presents a children’s program for ages 2-10. Here at GKA children will learn to follow directions, take turns, listen to and interpret music. The use of props and imagery will be used to engage the children in creative, imaginative play that involves movement, but very specific types of movement that will begin to develop their dance skills. Wonderfully qualified and creative teachers, under Kirkland’s pristine artistic oversight, will begin “Dance with Me” classes for 2-3 year olds (offered with an adult) as well as classes for girls and boys ages 4 – 10+. Classes will be administered by Rebecca Tsivkin, LRAD.

Rebecca Tsivkin is a member of the Royal Academy of Dance in London, where she received a teaching degree after completing an intensive three-year program. She has taught in Montessori schools and ballet academics on the East and West Coasts, and was a guest teacher at the California Sate University at Fullerton and the University of New Hampshire. She is a judge for the Performance Awards of the American Academy of Ballet, and is on faculty at Ballet Hispanica and the Summer School of Excellence at Purchase College SUNY.

Announcement of Wellness Program, January 11, 2011

The Creative Compass wellness curriculum was created to address the “mind-side” of traditional performing arts training, which includes mental and emotional health, as well as techniques for performance success. Focused primarily on the issues of self-identity and self-confidence, which are believed to be important components of healthy and adaptive coping, the curriculum encourages performing arts students to begin the process of self-examination and exploration with an eye towards their development as whole people. Classes will be instructed by Elizabeth Sullivan, whose bio can be found in the Faculty Bios page under 'About GKACB'.

Press

Gia on the Move, January 24, 2011... "Recently, Gelsey Kirkland’s Academy of Classical Ballet (GKA) energetically presented a truly pleasing showcase of both her young, dynamic students, as well as a debut for her newly minted, fledgling Academy..."

Bearnstown Journal, December 29, 2011... "Fifteen ballet excerpts provided a well-staged, wildly entertaining program of grace, technique, theatre, and artistry that almost made me forget I was watching students. It was an ambitious program for Miss Kirkland’s fairly new academy, and for the most part, the students’ grasp of the material chosen for them was well performed..."

cityArts, December 13, 2011..."When the studio company of Gelsey Kirkland’s Academy of Classical Ballet performs at the Symphony Space Dec. 16, examples of different character genres will be staged by someone in a position to know: Slava (Yaroslav) Fadeyev, who teaches both character and classical at Kirkland’s Academy..."

The Guardian, December 2, 2011..."This is Gelsey Kirkland dancing the Act 1 variation, or solo, in Giselle. The recording was made in 1975, when Kirkland was 23, and had just left New York City Ballet to become Mikhail Baryshnikov's partner at American Ballet Theatre..."

NYTimes, October 21, 2010..."Ms. Kirkland, who opened a ballet academy last month with her husband, Michael Chernov, a former dancer, actor and theater director, may be tiny, but she’s not the airy type..."
